Prof. Dr. Pascale Sandmann:
I studied Zoology and Neuropsychology at the University of Zurich, where I received my PhD in natural
sciences in 2009. Because I wanted to gain international research experience, I moved to Oldenburg,
where I worked as a Post-Doc in Prof. Stefan Debener’s group at the Department of Neuropsychology.
My research career took a step forward in 2013 when I was offered a (temporary) professorship for
„Audiological Diagnostics“ at the Hannover Medical School. I stayed there for two and a half years
until I accepted a permanent position at the ENT University Hospital of Cologne. This clinical
position not only allowed me to broaden my horizon in terms of clinical audiology, but also to set up
my own research group with the help of third-party funding.
I have been back in Oldenburg since 2023. Here I work part-time (51%) at the ENT University Hospital
(Evangelisches Krankenhaus), where I am the head of Audiology. I also have a part-time W2 professorship
for „Clinical Audiology“ (49%) at the University of Oldenburg. My position allows to bring basic
sciences and clinical application closer together. The research of my group focuses on cortical
plasticity after sensory deprivation and after cochlear implantation. Further topics are
multisensory interactions and cognition in patients with a cochlear implant.
